MSM: An Alternative in the Quest for Pain Relief
by Leslie Atterbury III, M.D.
In my practice, I have seen many patients with varying degrees of joint disease or discomfort. Men and women of all ages come to me for relief from the aches and pains associated with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Another patient has sustained complications from an accident. Still another suffers from tendon and ligament damage related to a sports injury. Bed rest, painkillers and anti-inflammatories can help eliminate the pain, up to a point. But the solution isn't to mask the symptoms; it's to eliminate the cause. And the question is, how do we find a way to help the body to repair the damage done?
Prescription medications have always played a significant role in the relief and treatment of joint aches and pains. At times, however, the side effects may outweigh the benefits. Gastrointestinal upset, kidney or liver toxicity, are just a few of the side effects associated with prescription drugs. The answer may be in a new formula from Whitewing Labs, Joint Aide.
Joint Aide combines key ingredients, MSM and glucosamine sulfate, with other essential vitamins, minerals and herbs, to sooth swollen joints while helping to prevent further deterioration of vital cartilage and aid the body in the repair of damaged tendons and ligaments.
The Forgotten Healer
The key ingredient in Joint Aide, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), is naturally found throughout the body with no known side effects or toxicity. It is a natural source of organic sulfur, which is vital to several of the body's connective tissues including hair, joints, muscles and skin, as well as to specific enzymatic and detoxification processes. Thus, MSM is thought to have wide-ranging benefits to human health.
Unfortunately for many persons with chronic pain, sulfur is often overlooked as a healing compound in modern medicine.
Indeed, as the authors of The Miracle of MSM, the definitive book on MSM note, "Sulfur also has a long history of healing but it has been overlooked in our current fascination with vitamins and minerals. When asked to think of minerals important for health . . . rarely does anyone mention sulfur."
MSM is valued for its ability to support healthy cells by supplying readily bioavailable sulfur.
Sulfur Deficiency: Not Uncommon
Though MSM is found naturally in the human body, limited studies suggest that the concentration of MSM drops with increasing age. Research suggests that a minimum concentration in the body may be critical to both normal function and structure.
MSM can be found abundantly in dairy products, but normal consumption would still leave a deficiency.
Pain: Key Area of Application
In The Miracle of MSM, the authors say that an important area of use for MSM is inhibition of pain impulses along nerve fibers; lessening of inflammation; increasing of blood supply; reduction of muscle spasm; and, softening of scar tissue. Thus, people suffering from a wide range of sore joint conditions could find Joint Aide with MSM extremely useful.
According to Dr. Stanley Jacob and co-authors, "Many people experience rapid relief after starting MSM. The authors go on to note, "MSM is a surprising supplement. When you start taking it, you may notice a number of good things happening in your life: more energy; cosmetic benefits such as softer skin, thicker hair, stronger nails; decreased scar tissue; and relief of constipation." Joint Aide combines MSM with glucosamine sulfate. In this regard, such formulas have the blessing of Dr. Jacob who has observed, "In 1997, one patient told me that she had better results when she took both MSM and glucosamine sulfate. There was less pain when she took both, she said, than when she took one or the other. I decided to test her observation and recommended to about two dozen osteoarthritis patients then taking MSM that they now add glucosamine sulfate.. The feedback was quite positive. Less pain, the patients said. Thus, there may be a synergistic effect from combining these two supplements."
Plan for Pain-free Living
Besides these ingredients, Joint Aide supplies the body with pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), boswellia and turmeric, a nutrient-herbal combination with good effects on joint health and for moderating inflammation. Joint Aide helps my patients in ways that are truly miraculous. Getting off prescription painkillers and finding your pain disappearing after years of suffering is a miracle in anyone's book of healing.
If you are suffering from joint discomfort, Joint Aide may be the answer that you have been seeking. It has been for so many persons.
